The Showdown: Halo 3 vs SOCOM
October 30, 2007 by Abdalla Ahmed

Finally after months of waiting it looks like Sony may be able to muster some form of a challenge to microsoft. Yes boys and girls, the much-anticipated PlayStation 3 debut of its SOCOM franchise of tactical shooters, SOCOM: Confrontation is set to be released this November (2007).
Before I go on about how “great” or not so “great” this game is, I think its only fair we review what the hype is all about.
Sony has announced a PlayStation 3 entry in its popular SOCOM series, namely SOCOM Confrontation. Given the abundance of obscenely large weapons, it seems a fair guess that all confrontations in the game will end in violence and battered egos. That’s precisely what Sony’s counting on, as the game does away with single-player pleasantries and prioritizes online mayhem. [JoyStiq]

We are promised and have been shown realistic SEAL gameplay and mission designs through association with Naval Special Warfare Command at the Sony Computer Entertainment America “Gamers Day” media event. You Battle through 12 single player missions in three new, heavily researched Areas of Operation ? each up to five times as large as past SOCOM AO?s.
“Utilize land vehicles and watercraft to traverse the terrain. Everything from a turret-equipped pickup to SEAL-team configured HMMWV to the SOC-R Assault Boat are available.”
Luisi (Game Director) explained that the goal of Confrontation was to create “the ultimate SOCOM online experience,” and to that end, the game will only be playable online. What’s more, the game will actually be purchasable online, as Sony plans to make it available through the PlayStation Network, as well as through traditional retail outlets.
SOCOM: Confrontation will feature team-based combat for up to 32 players, multiple international special forces units, customizable appearances, and clan-specific options, such as uniforms.
So we have seen a trailer which looks fantastic and have been told that we can play online with some gametypes featuring upto 32 players?! Man how can we decide between the two? I mean, yea they both feature just about everything but in the end I am going to stick with my halo 3 simply because the xbox 360 costs much cheaper to buy than the PS3…well here in the United Kingdom anyway.
If you want reasons specific to why Halo 3 is better then you should read my previous article detailing why it is a must sell for microsoft.
What do you think?

socom is way better
and SOCOM Confrontation
will look next gen
unlike halo3 its more
like halo2.5 it looks
the same as halo2
I guess we will just have to wait to see. I can not judge the game until its out!
The 360 is much cheaper than the PS3? Sorry to burst your bubble but the basic 40GB PS3 is only about £80 more than the basic premium 360. It seems like a big gap, I know, but you’d be forgetting that the wifi adaptor costs £55, xbox live sets you back £50 a year and you have to pay for the batteries in your controllers, unless you buy the £10 rechargeable battery packs. If you ever want to expand your hard drive you only have one choice and that’s the £130 120GB hard drive, whereas a laptop hard drive (you can use any SATA laptop hard drive in the ps3) of the same space only costs around £45.
If ever you want to watch High Definition movies, enjoy shilling out for the £115 HD DVD drive.
Three years down the line you could have spent up to £690 on your 360 (starting with a £200 console), excluding games, when you could have got the same features in a PS3 for £325 (starting with a £280 console and getting the hard drive). That is under half the price. Even if you only got a couple of these features you would go over the price of the PS3.
Feel free to pick Halo instead of Socom if you prefer the game but don’t try to convince us of bullshit. The PS3 is far better value than a 360. Call of Duty 4 is going to wipe the floor with those games anyway, so either get the expensive 360 with better online or the cheap PS3 and play that.
1)£80 difference is HUGE.
2) Xbox live costs £30 MAX
3) 20GB is MORE THAN ENOUGH for the games you will play with xbox 360.
4) HD-DVD? Watch that on your PC if you want, theres no need for that over priced piece of crap HD-DVD Drive MS is trying to sell to all of us.
5) What more bullshit facts have you got for me to consider?
Oh, And didn’t the PS3 like lower all their prices because of shitty sales?
Now, I ask you, who is “bullshitting” who?
1)I agree, £80 is huge, but I’m fairly certain that £355 is more. That’s the price difference between the £690 360 and the £325 PS3.
2)In fact we were both in error. Xbox live is currently £40 per year. Not £30 max, £40 every year.
3) 20GB is fine now, sure, but I said 3 years down the line, by which time it is likely that 360 owners are likely to have filled out the hard drive with downloaded movies and live arcade games. More specifically the movies.
4) How much does an HD DVD drive cost for a PC? Oh yeah, you
can’t get one yet. When you can, they’re going to cost around £150 at least. Yes that is more expensive than the 360 HD drive. Plus, why would you want to watch high definition movies on your computer? The whole purpose of high def movies is to watch them on a high def tv. I don’t know if you have one, but with falling prices, a large proportion of 360 owners are going to have HDTVs in the three years I stated. They will want high definition movies and that HD DVD drive is their cheapest option. PS3 owners already have a blu ray drive.
5) I can see you ran out of points here. I’ll use this space to remind you that I’m only quoting facts. If you don’t like the truth, that’s your problem buddy.
And yes, Sony lowered the prices because of poor sales. Ignoring the fact that the PS3 sales have actually been very similar to the 360’sfirst year sales, I have to ask you a question - Why do you find it a bad thing that sony lowered the price? Maybe now you can afford a PS3 and enjoy both consoles. Then, when your 360 red rings, you’ll still be able to play games while microsoft fix it or get you a new one.
Xbox live is £34.99 (http://www.game.co.uk/Xbox360/Hardware/Accessory/~r332558/Xbox-Live-13-month-Subscription-Card-Halo-3/)
And dont blue ray discs rot or something?…3 years and they’ll be gone!
I am not here to argue and facts are facts but there is no way in hell that Sony is anywhere near where they want to be right now in terms of sales.
Then again..I am an xbox 360 fan so what do I know?

That doesn’t matter to a gamer. If sony are pumping out cheap ps3s and great games, It’s a good idea to get one. The PS3 is much better value for money, and both consoles have great exclusive games, so a PS3 is a better purchase for anyone who only has the money for one. That is, unless they are desperate to play certain 360 exclusives, such as bioshock and mass effect.
Or the best game ever: Halo 3!
Obscenely large guns eh? “online mayhem”? You mean to tell me that a bunch of trash-talking fat 8-year-old scumbags running around with auto-aim and “creative” weaponry isn’t mayhem? Have you played Socom, or are you just another supporter of the crap Bill Gates gets away with? Don’t give me that “you can take auto-aim off” argument either, because it remains anyway. THAT is why people like playing it. There’s nothing wrong with halo, but comparing it to games like socom, games that take skill and tactical intelligence, is akin to comparing the war in Iraq with WW2, or comparing Ron Paul with Rudy Giuliani, naturally with Rudy and the Iraq war taking negative connotations. Halo should only impress the technologically impaired, or people who haven’t played any other shooters. If you like it simple, fine, but don’t lie to yourself; halo is easy to play, off and online, and tactics have little to do with it. As for the guns, they’re painfully simple. And headshots don’t REALLY count, either, unless you’re using the “50 cal” sniper rifle. You can’t heal in Socom; if you get shot, you lose some health, and it doesn’t center around respawn either, so there’s no room for mistakes. In socom, every gun has recoil (and it’s different depending on calibur), and while a headshot with any firearm in socom is an instant kill, the guns aren’t accurate like they are in halo; there’s an element called realism. Halo is an OLD GENERATION SHOOTER with a simple, pathetic engine, and I’d LOVE to see a halo player get more than two kills in ranked socom game, much less pass the rank of Ensign in less than 2 months. Did I mention Halo 1, 2, and 3 are almost exactly the same? Socom changes. You see, SONY doesn’t insult their customers, nor does it have blind fanatics backing it up with “facts”. I have played every halo, and most of the socom series, as well as many other shooters, to a large extent. I have a life, but I don’t like emo bullshit so I prefer to play games. If anyone wants to argue, I’d love a good debate, but please keep your fucking mouth shut if you haven’t played socom.
The rant above is my argument to the article poster.
OMG, I can’t believe people are still buying the bs Miscrosoft feeds them about its great products. The ps3 has more processing power than any personal computer on the market. In fact, it’s being used in labs because it’s cheaper than super computers, and performs millions of tasks at once. The xbox360 can’t even perform one two tasks without slowing down. Furthermore, the xbox360 becomes slower than a retard doing a calculus problem when you fill your hard drive even halfway. Better graphics? No, different graphics cards. It takes more intelligence to program on the PS3 is all. It’s a pain in the ass because it’s actually a NEXT GEN CONSOLE. The xbox360 is just an over-hyped xbox with better processing and slightly better graphics. Now for online play; other than halo, every xbox live game has ridiculous lag, which sucks because halo sucks, and considering halo is so simple, the only reason it doesn’t lag is probably because it amounts to about 8 kilobytes of programming, which you could run on a fucking commodore64 (yes fat 8-year-olds, I’m exaggerating). What’s horrible is they charge you about $60 per year for their “great” customer service. Their online community promotes an immature, primitive, myspace/highschool-like atmosphere, what with the “rep” and bio and all that crap. Isn’t it great that you can download demos for free? Not when you’re paying $60 per year just to access all the “great” marketplace content. They actually have the gall to charge people for pictures, and you can’t even buy it directly, you have to purchase points, which complicates things and ultimately allows them to “slyly” over-price the fantastic shit they sell online. But that’s cool, because everyone’s a tasteless cunt with rich parents who actually wants to pay for pictures so he/she can show the world his/her personality. Here’s a staggering statistic; 90% of all xbox360 owners are people who owned the original xbox, which in glorious coincidence also happens to be a piece of fucking shit.
