PSP Downgrader for V3.50 Firmware! - (D/L included)

June 28, 2007 by Abdalla Ahmed · Leave a Comment

Just a few days after announcing that they managed to sniff out the Illuminati exploit for PSP firmware 3.50, the Noobz team is letting the community know they’ve hit pay dirt - the firmware 3.50 firmware downgrader is here! Now we can all have a slice of homebrew-heaven as this’ll allow all commercial Sony firmwares to be downgradable back to firmware 1.50 - the gateway to Dark Alex’s Custom Firmwares.

This downgrader is for v3.50 firmware, and includes a port of the Homebrew Enabler (HEN) for firmware 3.50. It will automatically detect all known PSP motherboard types, and do the appropriate steps to ensure a safe downgrade.

We said it would be done - although some people even said we couldn’t - and lo… let there be a downgrader! Noobz are proud to present a downgrader for any PSP - even the one in the picture on the left Wink.

Warnings:

  • Any downgrader carries some risk of permanently damaging your PSP. We’ve done everything we can to remove as much danger as possible, but if you choose to use this downgrader, you are accepting all of the risk involved. Nobody else will be held responsible for any damage to your PSP, howsoever caused.
  • Recent Sony official firmwares (3.30 onwards) have included checks that block upgrade from previously-downgraded PSPs with TA-082 or later motherboards. If you use this downgrader on such a PSP, you will lock yourself out of official firmware updates - although you will still be able to use new OE firmwares when they are released. We intend to release a tool to allow a return to official firmwares in the future.
  • This software is provided free of charge, so that you can use legitimate homebrew on your PSP. You are explicitly prohibited from selling it, or using it to pirate commercial games or applications. If you want to play a commercial game, do the decent thing and support the developers by buying it. If you don’t, then YOU are contributing to the death of the PSP software industry.
  • To use this downgrader, you will need the following:

    1. A PSP, upgraded to the official Sony v3.50 firmware. You should also set your language settings to “English”.
    2. A legal Lumines UMD, either the EU (ULES00043) or US (ULUS10002) version. The original, Platinum, or Greatest Hits versions are all fine. Support for the Japanese version will come soon.
    3. Sufficient intelligence and english language skills to be able to carefully and throroughly read the instructions.
    4. It would also help if you’ve previously run the Illuminati Hello World, so that you’re familiar with how to run the Illuminati exploit.

For instructions on how to run the downgrader, see the Downgrader_HOWTO.txt file in the ZIP.

    Fellow Modder Faces Jail Sentence!!

June 27, 2007 by Abdalla Ahmed · Leave a Comment

A San Diego-area man has been arrested and charged with 10 felonies relating to selling pirated games and modding consoles. Frederick Brown was taken into custody earlier this month after his home was raided by the San Diego Computer and Technology Crime High-Tech Response Unit (CATCH) and has since been freed after posting bail in the amount of $100,000.

In his home, Brown had over a thousand copies of pirated games as well as a large number of mod chips. Brown had allegedly built up a thriving business selling counterfeit games and installing mod chips, having advertised his services on Craigslist and other web sites. He allegedly sold pirated games from his Vista, CA, residence as well, including both discs and hard drives preloaded with games that he would install into customers’ Xboxes and Xbox 360s,Entertainment Software Association senior VP for intellectual property enforcement Ric Hirsch told Ars Technica.

“Some of our member companies had seen his listings on Craigslist,” Hirsch said. “We started to make some inquiries on our own last year and eventually through our investigations accumulated enough evidence to bring it to the attention of the CATCH team.”

Hirsch explained that the ESA chose to pursue a criminal case instead of suing Brown in civil court because of the scope of his activities. “CATCH was very receptive to the evidence we brought them and were able to put the investigation together in very short order,” Hirsch told Ars.

In the US, the DMCA bars the use of technological measures to bypass copy protection, and mod chips fall in to that category. Console manufacturers have taken an extremely dim view of mod chips, with Microsoft recently seeking out and kicking modded Xboxes off of Xbox Live. Last fall, a French company called Divineo that sold mod chips for the major consoles was hit with a $9 million judgment after being sued by Sony and the ESA.

Despite the hate from the ESA and console manufacturers, many gamers are big fans of mod chips, but not because of the piracy angle. Mod chips also allow gamers to play out-of-region games and homebrew software that unmodded consoles cannot play. With all of the pressure on the mod chip community, hackers are increasingly turning to softmods, which take advantage of holes in software to unlock systems.

Hack the N95’s News reader template

June 26, 2007 by Abdalla Ahmed · Leave a Comment

As you may have already know, the Nokia N95 runs S60 platform 3rd edition, Feature Pack 1 and it means that it comes with new improved Safari browser and improved RSS reader. Feed reader now supports the Atom format (in addition to RSS) and the browser renders feeds in html format.

Previously, feeds could only be viewed as short text only summaries while the new version is capable to process and show, images, full text and links in html format which is incomparable better solution, but..unfortunately, the main layout/template isn’t as good as it should be and therefore the whole concept doesn’t looks very well - But boy do we have something for you!

Text size is simply too large and it makes feed really hard to use and not eye friendly. Even worse, feed reader isn’t affected by the font settings in the browser itself and there is no way to change the font size just like that. Of course, as a real freak I have already found solution and right settings and after hack it looks much better but I know that average S60 user don’t know how to do it and how to change the html template. Anyway, after many user requests and questions over at our forum section, Ask guru form and Shoot box, we have decide to stop it, to make template and simple guide how to hack Feed Reader template.

Stalker remotely controls family cellphones, even when they’re off!

    June 25, 2007 by Abdalla Ahmed · 3 Comments

Maybe it’s just a long-running prank, but the reign of terror endured by three Fircrest families buries the needle on the creepy meter.

For four months, the Kuykendalls, the Prices and the McKays say, they’ve been harassed and threatened by mysterious cell phone stalkers who track their every move and occasionally lurk by their homes late at night, screaming and banging on walls.

Police can’t seem to stop them. The late-night visitors vanish before officers arrive. The families say investigators have a hard time believing the stalkers can control cell phones without touching them and suspect an elaborate hoax. Complaints to their phone companies do no good – the families say they’ve been told what the stalkers are doing is impossible.

In one case, the stalker changed the ringtone of a phone to say “answer your phone.”
